Hamid Mir’s 81% Fake Twitter Followers Exposed

Hamid Mir’s Twitter account is being scrutinized after he was removed from the broadcast from his show “Capital Talk” by Geo News, after his heated remarks against the Defense Institution of the country in Islamabad. He is now alleged to have Indian links. One of the previous analysis reported that 81% of the accounts following Mir’s account seem to be bots or fake accounts based on their lack of activity and engagement.

A young journalist Makhdoom Shahab-Ud-Din recently revealed that Pakistan’s controversial journalist Hamid Mir’s verified Social Media accounts were being operated from India.

However, the senior journalist has dismissed the accusations. Mir responded by claiming that he had no idea about the verified Facebook page under his name. Mir blamed Facebook and demanded an investigation.

A young tweep @meddytweets who according to his profile is a Data Scientist and Certified Ethical Hacker had rolled out interesting information and report analyzing Hamid Mir’s followers on Twitter in October 2020. He analyzed the followers by different parameters i.e. the number of followers, number of tweets, inactivity, and age of the accounts, and others.

The report by @meddytweets states that, in October 2020, Mir had 6.4 million followers, out of which 1,322,955 followers had 0 followers, 951,733 followers had only 1 follower and 1,839,946 followers have 2 to 5 followers.

While 2,607,876 followers account had not posted any tweet then, 376,221 followers account posted 1 tweet and 1,347,311 followers account had posted 2 to 5 tweets.

As far as age and inactivity of accounts are concerned, 412,081 accounts were created within a month before, whereas 3.2 million accounts had been inactive for a period of 10 months to 5 years.

Hence, it was found that more than 81% of account followers were either fake or bots, which are used to create hype or to show a large audience, and out of 6.05 million followers 5.79 never liked or retweeted any tweet of Hamid Mir and 3.7 million accounts were dead.
