Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in India has decided to omit the books authored by Pakistani and Egyptian authors from the syllabus.
AMU was founded by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan in 1875 as the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh.
The BA and MA students in the Department of Islamic Studies were being taught the books written by Indo-Pak writer Abu al-A’la al-Mawdudi and Egyptian writer Sayyid Qutb.
“This decision has been taken in response to a recent letter that was written by social activist and academician Madhu Kishwar, along with some other academicians, to PM Modi, in which the books of these authors were demanded not to be taught to students,” a university official was quoted as saying.
There is also mention in the letter that these books are taught at other universities such as Jamia Milia Islamia and Hamdard University.
According to Professor Muhammad Ismail, head of the Islamic Studies Department, all books written by Pakistani authors will be removed from the curriculum of Aligarh Muslim University.
