President Donald Trump revealed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy will visit Washington to sign a preliminary agreement on rare earth minerals.
This deal, still in its early stages according to Ukraine’s prime minister, involves Ukraine sharing revenue from its mineral resources with a joint US-Ukraine fund.
Zelenskiy emphasized that the deal’s success relies heavily on continued US aid and fruitful talks. Ukraine is seeking robust US support to end Russia’s war, which began in 2022. Notably, US-Russian talks, excluding Ukraine, are set to continue.
During his visit, Zelenskiy is expected to sign the agreement, covering rare earth minerals and other topics. However, Trump made it clear that Washington won’t provide comprehensive security guarantees, suggesting instead that Europe will take on that responsibility.
Ukraine has been pushing for US security guarantees as part of the deal, which Trump views as compensation for US aid during the war. This situation underscores the intricate dynamics between Ukraine, the US, and Russia amid the ongoing conflict.
