A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson sharply criticized U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest tariff policies on Monday, labeling them as “typical unilateralism and protectionism, and economic bullying.”
The remarks were made by spokesperson Lin Jian during a regular press conference, addressing the escalating trade dispute between the two economic giants.
Lin Jian accused the United States of engaging in “hegemonic practices” under the guise of reciprocity, arguing that the tariffs prioritize U.S. interests while undermining those of other nations.
He stated, “US tariffs in the name of reciprocity only serve their own interest at the expense of other countries,” reinforcing China’s staunch opposition to the measures.
The spokesperson’s comments follow Trump’s statement late Sunday, April 6, 2025, where he declared he is “not willing to make any deal with China unless the trade deficit is solved.”
The U.S. has imposed tariffs on multiple trading partners, including China, prompting a strong response from Beijing. Lin condemned the policy, calling it “typical unilateral, protectionist bullying” and asserting that “threats and pressure are not the right way to deal with China.”
China’s central government has pledged to “resolutely safeguard its legitimate rights and interests” against what it deems reckless U.S. trade actions.
Lin further criticized the U.S. for placing “America First” above international rules, accusing Washington of sacrificing the legitimate interests of other countries for its own agenda.
The exchange coincides with U.S. economic data showing the unemployment rate rising to 4.2% in March 2025, up from 4.1% the previous month and above the forecasted 4.1%.
As trade tensions intensify, both states remain firm, raising concerns about potential global economic repercussions.
