MOSCOW: Russia has dispatched 13 tons of humanitarian assistance to Iran through Azerbaijan, the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia announced on Thursday.
In a statement, the ministry said the shipment, which mainly consists of medicines, was transported to Azerbaijan and will be handed over to Iranian authorities through official channels.
The ministry added that the delivery was carried out on the instructions of Russian President Vladimir Putin, with the ministry’s aviation units responsible for transporting the supplies.
“The ministry’s aviation organized the delivery of medicines to the Republic of Azerbaijan for subsequent transfer to authorized representatives of the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the statement said.
The humanitarian shipment comes amid escalating regional tensions following large-scale attacks launched by the United States and Israel on Iran on February 28.
According to Iranian officials, the strikes have killed more than 1,300 people, including Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei.
In response, Tehran has carried out missile and drone attacks targeting Israel as well as locations in Gulf states hosting US military assets.
