China Terms Killing of Iran’s Ali Larijani ‘Unacceptable’

BEIJING: China has strongly criticised the killing of senior Iranian figure Ali Larijani in an Israeli airstrike, describing the incident as “unacceptable” and calling for restraint amid rising regional tensions.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, speaking at a routine press briefing, said Beijing opposes the use of force and condemned attacks targeting political leaders as well as civilians.

China reiterated its stance that disputes should be resolved through dialogue and adherence to international law, warning against further escalation in the region.

Larijani’s death was reported by Iranian media and later confirmed by Israeli authorities, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who suggested the development could influence Iran’s political landscape.

A prominent and experienced statesman, Larijani held key positions throughout his career, including heading Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and serving as speaker of parliament. He also played a major role in shaping Iran’s nuclear policy and diplomatic outreach.

Born in 1957 in Najaf to an influential clerical family, Larijani was educated in philosophy and had a long career spanning military, media, and political institutions.

China’s response reflects broader international concern over the intensifying conflict in the Middle East and its potential global repercussions.
