Pakistan has officially stepped into the next generation of telecommunications, with the government awarding 5G spectrum licenses and telecom operators immediately beginning service rollout in select major cities. The milestone follows a transparent auction that concluded last week, selling 480 megahertz (MHz) of spectrum for approximately $507 million.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who witnessed the signing ceremony of the license agreements in Islamabad on March 19, declared the launch a “major milestone” for the nation. He emphasized that the high-speed technology would be a catalyst for progress across critical sectors, including agriculture, technology, and industry. “This will benefit our youth and propel Pakistan into a new era of digital innovation,” the Prime Minister stated, vowing to expand the service nationwide, including to rural areas.
The auction, conducted by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), saw three major operators compete for the crucial 2,600MHz band, a key frequency for delivering true 5G speeds. PTA Chairman Hafeez ur Rehman announced that with this addition, Pakistan now leads the region in total spectrum capacity. Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja highlighted the significant upgrade, noting that 480 MHz has been added to the system, a substantial increase from the previous 274 MHz, which promises dramatically improved internet speeds in the coming months.
The rollout initiates in selected urban centers, marking the first commercial availability of 5G technology in Pakistan. While consumers in these areas can now access ultra-fast mobile internet, the government and operators have outlined a phased plan for national expansion. The Prime Minister acknowledged initial legal hurdles in the auction process but praised the efforts of Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar in ensuring a transparent and successful conclusion.
This development is expected to accelerate Pakistan’s digital economy, enabling advancements in smart agriculture, telemedicine, and industrial automation. As operators activate their networks, the focus will shift to infrastructure development and affordability to ensure widespread adoption. The successful auction and swift rollout signal a concerted push to bridge the digital divide and harness technology for economic growth.
