Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) on Tuesday predicted that Eidul Azha is likely to be observed in Pakistan on May 27, based on astronomical calculations regarding the Zilhajj moon sighting.
In a statement, Suparco said the new moon of Zilhajj 1447 AH is expected to be born on May 17 at 1:01am.
According to the space agency, the moon’s age at sunset on the same day would be around 18 hours and 30 minutes, while the time difference between sunset and moonset along Pakistan’s coastal areas is expected to be approximately 60 minutes.
Based on these astronomical indicators, Suparco said the chances of sighting the Zilhajj crescent on the evening of May 17 appear favourable, provided weather conditions remain clear and visibility near the horizon is suitable.
The agency stated that if the moon is sighted as expected, the first day of Zilhajj 1447 AH would fall on Monday, May 18, marking the end of the Islamic month of Zilqad.
Consequently, Eidul Azha would likely be celebrated across the country on May 27.
However, Suparco clarified that the final announcement regarding the beginning of Zilhajj and the Eid date would be made by the Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee after considering verified moon sighting testimonies from across the country.
