Karachi Police Arrest Suspect in Korangi Woman Harassment Case

KARACHI: Police have apprehended a suspect accused of harassing a woman in Karachi’s Korangi area, officials confirmed on Wednesday, following a viral video that sparked public outrage and a swift law enforcement response.

The incident occurred several days ago in Korangi No. 6, Sector 51-B, where a motorcyclist was seen harassing a woman in a public space. The video, which circulated widely on social media, prompted immediate action by Awami Colony Police Station. During a targeted operation, authorities arrested the suspect identified as Muhammad Danish, whom officials described as “clever and evasive,” noting that he had altered his appearance—changing his beard and facial features—to evade identification. Police utilized CCTV footage to trace and locate him.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Korangi confirmed the arrest but stated that no formal complaint has yet been filed regarding the incident. “A case will be registered once the victim or a representative lodges a formal complaint, after which legal proceedings will commence,” the SSP said. Police are urging the woman or her family to come forward to initiate the legal process.

This recent case echoes a similar incident in October 2023, when police arrested a private school principal in Karachi’s Saudabad area for allegedly harassing female students. That principal, identified as Azam, was taken into custody after a father of one of the victims filed a complaint, according to SSP Korangi at the time.

Harassment against women remains a pressing issue in Pakistan. According to Human Rights Watch, despite legal frameworks such as the Protection Against Harassment of Women at the Workplace Act, enforcement remains inconsistent. In Karachi alone, dozens of harassment cases are reported monthly, though many go unregistered due to social stigma or lack of trust in the system.

Police have assured the public that they are committed to ensuring women’s safety in Karachi’s public spaces. They have encouraged victims to report incidents without hesitation, emphasizing that anonymous complaints can also be lodged via the government’s toll-free helpline (15) or through the Women Safety App. Citizens have also been urged to share any relevant CCTV footage with authorities to aid investigations.

As the case proceeds, police are expected to present the suspect in court and seek a remand for further interrogation. The incident has reignited calls for stricter penalties and better urban surveillance to deter such acts. For now, the arrest marks a step toward accountability, but advocates caution that sustained societal and legal reforms are needed to address the root causes of gender-based harassment.
