Supreme Court of Pakistan Orders To Shift Former PM Imran Khan From Jail to Hospital

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the authorities to transfer jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan from prison to a hospital in Islamabad for medical examinations, following a petition filed by his lawyers over concerns about his health.

Justice Shahid Waheed said Khan, 73, is expected to be moved within the next two days to Shifa International Hospital in the capital.

Khan has remained in jail since 2023 after being convicted in several cases, including corruption-related charges. He and his wife were sentenced late last year to 17 years in prison.

The former prime minister has undergone medical treatment for an eye condition this year. His family and legal team have claimed that he has suffered significant loss of vision in his right eye, prompting further concerns about his health.

Khan, a former Pakistan cricket captain, served as prime minister from 2018 until his removal through a parliamentary no-confidence vote in 2022. His ouster came amid growing political tensions and a deterioration in relations between his government and Pakistan’s powerful military establishment.

Since his removal from office, Khan has faced numerous criminal and corruption cases. He and his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party have repeatedly rejected the allegations, maintaining that the cases are politically motivated.

His arrest in May 2023 sparked widespread protests across Pakistan. Some demonstrations turned violent, resulting in clashes, damage to public property and the arrest of hundreds of people.

The Supreme Court’s latest order now clears the way for Khan to receive further medical assessment at Shifa International Hospital while he remains in custody.
