Pakistan Voices Deep Concern Over Venezuela Crisis at UN Security Council

NEW YORK: Pakistan on Monday voiced strong concern over the rapidly unfolding situation in Venezuela, warning that rising tensions there could threaten regional and global peace and security.

Addressing an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council convened to discuss the crisis, Pakistan’s Acting Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Usman Jadoon, said that instability in the region was especially troubling at a time when the international community was already grappling with multiple global challenges.

The meeting, the first of the year for the Council, was chaired by Somalia.

Ambassador Jadoon reminded members that the UN Charter obliges states to refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity and political independence of other countries. He stressed the importance of sovereign equality, non-interference in internal affairs and the peaceful resolution of disputes, noting that unilateral military actions violated these fundamental principles as well as the doctrine of sovereign immunity.

Warning that such actions set dangerous precedents, he said they risk undermining the global legal order and could fuel prolonged instability with unpredictable consequences. He urged all parties to pursue de-escalation and emphasized that dialogue and diplomacy were the only viable paths toward lasting solutions, carried out with full respect for the will of the Venezuelan people and without external interference.

Pakistan also expressed hope that Latin America and the Caribbean, widely recognized as a “Zone of Peace,” would remain free of conflict and continue progressing toward greater regional cooperation and shared prosperity.
