New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Saturday strongly criticized the latest military strikes carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran, describing the action as a “catastrophic escalation.”
In a post on social media platform X, Mamdani said the attacks marked a dangerous expansion of what he called an illegal war of aggression.
“Today’s military strikes on Iran — carried out by the United States and Israel — mark a catastrophic escalation,” he wrote. “Bombing cities. Killing civilians. Opening a new theater of war.”
He added that Americans do not want another war pursued in the name of regime change, saying the public instead seeks relief from economic pressures and a path toward peace.
Mamdani also said he was prioritizing public safety in New York City in light of the developments. He confirmed that he had been in contact with the city’s Police Commissioner and emergency management officials, and that authorities had taken proactive steps, including increasing patrols.
Addressing Iranian residents of New York, he said they remain an integral part of the city’s community and assured them of their safety.
The mayor’s remarks followed a joint US–Israeli attack on Iran early Saturday, which officials said targeted threats posed by the Iranian government. Iran responded by launching missiles and drones at Israeli targets and US military bases in the region.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran’s retaliatory strikes were confined to military sites and did not target specific countries.
