On Friday, Mehmood Abbas, the president of Palestine, addressed the United General Assembly (UNGA) in a virtual session where he gave Israel an ultimatum to give up with its illegal occupation of Palestinian territories within one year, otherwise, he can give it a thought to withdraw the recognition of Israel.
The Palestinian President in his virtual session has also called Israel “apartheid” and a proponent of “ethnic cleansing”.
Mehmood while addressing the session has also expressed his willingness to “work throughout the year” for determining the final status of both states within the legal framework of the “United Nations Resolution”. He also requested Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the UN to “convene an international peace conference” in this regard.
Israeli ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, took the same platform to counter the words of the Palestinian President. He said, “those who truly support peace and negotiations do not threaten delusional ultimatums from the UN platform as he did in his speech”.
It is worthy to consider that the Palestinians are fed up with the long rule of Mehmood Abbas, and his popularity among the masses has fallen drastically.
It should be noted that the Palestinian territories, East Jerusalem, the west bank and Gaza were occupied by Israel as a result of the 1967 war, whereas in 1993 the Oslo accords resulted in Palestine recognizing Israel.
