During a closed-door emergency session of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Russia diverged from the consensus by refusing to condemn Palestine. Russian envoy asked the international body to implement it’s resolutions on Palestine.
In this high-stakes meeting, which took place amidst the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, the UNSC failed to attain the required unanimity for a joint statement.
The session, crucial for addressing the escalating crisis, faced an impasse as Russia’s stance differed from that of other UNSC members. Russia emphasized the importance of implementing previous UN resolutions concerning Palestine, diverting attention from an immediate condemnation.As the conflict between Israel and Hamas continued to intensify, the toll on human lives grew.
The Palestinian group, Hamas, launched an assault on Israeli towns, resulting in over 1,100 casualties and the taking of hundreds of hostages. In response, Israel declared a state of war and unleashed a devastating barrage on densely-populated Gaza, resulting in the loss of many lives. The majority of the people include children, women and civilians compared to that of the Hamas fighters.
Amidst this turmoil, the Russian envoy to the UN articulated Moscow’s desire for an immediate cessation of hostilities. Russia advocated for a swift ceasefire and meaningful negotiations, emphasizing that the ongoing conflict was, in part, a consequence of unresolved issues.
Russian government also called upon the parties to the conflict for restraint. According to a press release, Kremlin asked for the creation of two separate sovereign states under the 1937 two states solution to the Palestinian crisis.
