Palestine Opens Embassy in London After UK Recognition Decision

The Palestinian diplomatic mission in London was formally upgraded to an embassy on Monday during a brief inauguration ceremony, a move described by the Palestinian ambassador as a historic step in relations between the United Kingdom and Palestine.

Speaking outside the building in west London—previously known as the Palestinian Mission to the UK—Ambassador Husam Zomlot said the opening marked the establishment of the Embassy of the State of Palestine with full diplomatic status and privileges.

The change follows the UK government’s announcement that it will formally recognise the State of Palestine in September 2025. That decision was taken alongside similar commitments by several other countries, including Canada and Australia, amid heightened international concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Wearing a traditional black-and-white keffiyeh, Zomlot said the shift from mission to embassy symbolised more than a symbolic renaming, calling it a turning point toward Palestinian statehood.

He described the inauguration as a moment of hope and resilience, and part of the Palestinian people’s long struggle for freedom and self-determination. Unveiling a new plaque at the entrance, Zomlot said the event underscored the belief that lasting peace is achievable when built on justice, equality and mutual recognition.

The UK Foreign Office did not immediately respond to questions about whether Britain plans to open its own embassy in the Palestinian territories.

Representing the UK at the ceremony, British diplomatic official Alistair Harrison welcomed the development, calling it a positive step forward in bilateral relations. He congratulated the ambassador and his team, describing the occasion as the start of a new phase in cooperation between the two sides.

The inauguration comes as a fragile ceasefire continues in Gaza, following the war launched by Israel after the October 7, 2023 attacks.
