Balochistan Abolishes ‘B’ Areas, Merges Levies Force into Police

QUETTA: The Balochistan government has abolished all ‘B’ areas across the province and merged the Levies Force into the Balochistan Police, the Home Ministry announced on Monday.Previously, law enforcement in the province was divided into two categories. The Balochistan Police operated in ‘A’ areas, while the Levies Force was responsible for security in ‘B’ areas under the supervision of district and divisional administrations. This system has now been ended.

According to an official notification, the government has declared the Sibi and Loralai divisions as ‘A’ areas, bringing them fully under the jurisdiction of the Balochistan Police. The decision was approved during a meeting of the provincial cabinet.

All personnel of the Levies Force — including provincial and former federal Levies serving in the converted areas, as well as members of the CPEC Wing — have been absorbed into the Balochistan Police.

They will retain their existing ranks, titles, pay scales, and benefits in line with those of the provincial police.

The notification stated that the administration, operations, and services of the merged force and converted areas will now be governed by the Balochistan Police Act, 2011.It added that all assets of the former Levies Force, including budget allocations, DDO codes, weapons, vehicles, police stations, check-posts, records, investigations, training institutions, and related infrastructure, will be transferred to the Balochistan Police.

Under the new arrangement, the superintendent of police (SP) in the converted districts will assign police personnel to assist district administrations and other government bodies in enforcing local and special laws.

The commissioners of Sibi and Loralai divisions have been directed to complete the transition process within 30 days.Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti welcomed the move, saying it has resolved the long-standing confusion over the implementation of a uniform law enforcement system in the province.

“The division between A and B areas has been abolished, and the Levies Force has been formally and legally merged into the Balochistan Police,” he said in a post on X. He added that the decision would clearly define state responsibilities and strengthen public security.

In 2019, the provincial cabinet had already converted Levies areas in Quetta, Gwadar, and Lasbela into police jurisdictions as part of efforts to improve law and order.
