Pakistan escorted Iranian negotiators after talks amid security concerns

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan deployed fighter jets to escort an Iranian delegation back home following inconclusive talks with the United States, amid concerns over a potential security threat, dawn reported citing reuters.

The operation was carried out after Iranian officials expressed fears that they could be targeted during their return journey, possibly by Israel.

Air escort operation

According to officials familiar with the development, the Pakistan Air Force mobilised around two dozen aircraft, including advanced fighter jets and an Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS), to ensure the safe passage of the delegation.

Sources said the aircraft provided continuous air cover until the delegation reached Iranian territory, describing the mission as a significant operational undertaking.

The Iranian team, led by Abbas Araghchi and Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, had travelled to Islamabad for high-level negotiations with US officials.

Security concerns

Officials said the escort followed discussions about a “hypothetical threat” during the return journey. While Iranian representatives did not formally request protection, Pakistan reportedly insisted on providing the security cover as a precaution.

A regional diplomat said there had been concerns that the delegation’s aircraft could be at risk, prompting Islamabad to adopt measures beyond standard diplomatic protocol.

Talks ended without breakthrough

The talks — the highest-level direct engagement between Washington and Tehran in decades — ended without an agreement, though both sides kept diplomatic channels open.

Despite the lack of a breakthrough, sources said preparations had already been underway for a possible second round of negotiations.

Future arrangements

Officials indicated that similar security arrangements could be offered for future visits if requested by the Iranian side, while routine airspace coverage would otherwise be provided within Pakistan.

US President Donald Trump also expressed optimism that talks could resume soon, suggesting the conflict could move towards a resolution.
