The Sindh government has officially taken notice of the arson incident in Jacobabad, where multiple houses were set ablaze following a freewill marriage, spokesperson Saadia Javed confirmed on Saturday.
Speaking to the media, Javed stated that Chief Minister Sindh acted promptly on the first day of the incident, directing authorities to submit a detailed report and take strict action against those responsible. The unfortunate event unfolded about a week ago when a young woman entered into a marriage of her own free will, prompting her family to file a kidnapping complaint with local police.
According to Javed, the woman is safe and currently in government custody, while the matter is sub judice in court. The spokesperson emphasized that the government will take all necessary steps to compensate for the damage to houses, though the exact number of torched homes remains unclear.
The incident gained widespread attention after a video surfaced showing a heated exchange between two local figures. In the footage, one individual, Saddam Hussain, allegedly confessed to setting fire to the houses of Sardar Ahmed Ali Channa. In response, Sardar Channa accused Saddam Hussain Buriro of attacking the village with a mob of approximately 500 people.
Authorities have been directed to investigate the arson, identify the culprits, and ensure they face legal consequences. The Sindh government reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting citizens’ rights, particularly in matters involving personal choices such as marriage.
Human rights organizations have condemned the attack, calling for greater protection of individuals exercising their right to marry freely under Pakistani law. The incident highlights ongoing challenges related to honor-based violence in rural areas.
Meanwhile, local police have registered a case and launched a search for the suspects. The government has assured that justice will be served and that similar incidents will be prevented through stricter enforcement of laws against mob violence and forced marriages.
As the investigation continues, the spokesperson urged the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading misinformation. The court is expected to hear the case in the coming days, with the government closely monitoring proceedings to ensure a fair outcome.
