KARACHI: In a decisive response to escalating street crime, Sindh Police Inspector General Javed Alam Odho has ordered an immediate crackdown on robbery suspects across Karachi, demanding specialized teams arrest perpetrators and implement stringent preventive measures. The directive comes amid growing public concern over a recent surge in armed robberies targeting citizens across Pakistan’s largest metropolis.
IG Odho has demanded a comprehensive report from Additional IG Karachi Azad Khan detailing all recent incidents, emphasizing that “strict measures must be implemented to control and prevent street crimes.” He instructed the formation of rapid-response police teams specifically tasked with apprehending suspects, while directing all zonal DIGs and SSPs to intensify intelligence-based operations against criminal networks operating in the city.
The police chief outlined a multi-pronged strategy focusing on enhanced visibility and technological integration. “We must leverage modern technology, including increased CCTV monitoring,” Odho stated, ordering improvements to police patrolling routes and the snap-checking system. He specifically mandated the identification of crime hotspots for special surveillance deployment, while urging officers to address public complaints promptly and improve emergency response times. “The law and order situation must not be allowed to deteriorate at any cost,” he emphasized.
This security push coincides with a major internal cleanup operation within the Karachi police force. In a parallel development, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Zone Asad Raza suspended 19 police personnel from District Keamari for alleged involvement in illegal activities, including corruption and smuggling. The suspended officers—including Assistant Sub-Inspectors, Head Constables, and Constables from various stations—have been transferred to the Suspended Men Company at Garden Headquarters pending formal investigation.
“This disciplinary action demonstrates our commitment to purging the force of black sheep,” said DIG Raza, who signed the suspension orders. The suspended personnel will continue receiving salaries during the investigation but must attend daily roll calls and parades as per standard regulations. The crackdown reflects broader concerns about police accountability in Pakistan, where law enforcement reforms remain an ongoing challenge.
The twin initiatives—external crime suppression and internal corruption purge—come as Karachi residents report increasing vulnerability to street crimes. With a population exceeding 20 million, Karachi has historically grappled with complex security challenges, including targeted operations against criminal syndicates.
