KARACHI: Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGC) has announced the successful restoration of gas supply to several areas of Karachi following the completion of pipeline-lowering work near the NIPA flyover, ARY News reported on Sunday.
The maintenance work, which involved lowering heavy-pressure pipelines (16-inch and 20-inch diameters) near the BRT route at NIPA, was conducted at the request of Trans Karachi. The scheduled shutdown began at 10:00 PM on Saturday and concluded at 5:00 AM on Sunday, with supply fully restored thereafter.
According to an SSGC social media update, the affected areas that experienced temporary suspensions during the maintenance have now resumed normal gas supply. The localities include major healthcare facilities such as Liaquat National Hospital, Aga Khan University Hospital, and the Karachi Central Prison. Residential areas covered include all blocks of Gulshan-e-Iqbal, PECHS, Saddar, Garden, Jamshaid Road, Jahangir Road, PIB Colony, Lines Area, Lyari, and parts of Kharadar.
The SSGC had earlier issued a public notice advising residents of these areas about the planned shutdown to facilitate the pipeline-lowering project, which is part of infrastructure improvements along the BRT corridor. The utility company emphasized that the work was necessary to ensure the safety and reliability of the gas network while accommodating upcoming transport projects.
Residents expressed relief at the timely restoration of supply, particularly those in areas dependent on gas for cooking and heating. The SSGC has assured that no further disruptions are expected from this project, though routine maintenance may be scheduled periodically.
This development comes as Karachi continues to grapple with aging infrastructure and frequent gas outages. The SSGC has urged consumers to report any irregularities in supply through its official helpline.
