Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday thanked Qatar for its strong support of Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing regional tensions and promoting peace.
According to a statement shared by the prime minister’s spokesperson for foreign media, Mosharraf Zaidi, PM Shehbaz held a warm telephone conversation with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, during which the two leaders discussed the evolving regional and international situation.
The Pakistani premier appreciated Qatar’s endorsement of Pakistan-led mediation initiatives and praised Doha’s constructive role in regional diplomacy and efforts to build consensus for peace and de-escalation.
Both leaders agreed on the importance of continued dialogue and close coordination among all stakeholders to address regional challenges and maintain stability.
PM Shehbaz also conveyed his greetings to the Qatari leadership and said he was looking forward to welcoming the Qatari prime minister to Pakistan on an official visit soon.
Later, the prime minister confirmed the conversation in a post on X, saying both countries remained committed to peace, dialogue and regional stability. He also thanked Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for Qatar’s continued support for Pakistan’s peace efforts.
The call comes as Pakistan continues diplomatic engagement aimed at easing tensions between the United States and Iran following months of conflict triggered by US-Israeli strikes on Iran earlier this year.
Although a Pakistan-brokered ceasefire announced on April 8 has largely held, negotiations for a comprehensive settlement remain stalled. Pakistan hosted the first direct US-Iran talks in Islamabad in April, but discussions ended without a final agreement.
As part of ongoing mediation efforts, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi recently visited Tehran and held meetings with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
Diplomatic sources said Pakistan’s latest outreach was part of continued shuttle diplomacy aimed at reviving the stalled peace process after US President Donald Trump rejected Tehran’s latest proposals.
