Imran Khan medical check-up at Adiala jail was carried out by a special medical team from the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims), jail sources told Geo News on Sunday, as the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder remained behind bars.
The examination was comprehensive, with the team assessing the former prime minister’s blood pressure, cholesterol and eyes. According to the sources, the Pims team was headed by Dr Arif Khan, while medical staff from the Adiala jail hospital assisted during the check-up. Imran, 73, has been incarcerated since August 2023 following convictions that he and his party describe as politically motivated.
The latest Imran Khan medical check-up comes amid heightened political tension, with the PTI having announced a nationwide protest, including a march on Islamabad scheduled for September 27, to demand his release and the supremacy of the Constitution. On August 18, the Supreme Court had directed Adiala jail authorities to transfer Imran to Shifa International Hospital for medical assessment and treatment. However, the government instead took the former premier to Pims, citing security concerns.
Since his ouster in April 2022 through a no-confidence vote, Imran has faced multiple legal cases, including allegations of selling state gifts and an unlawful marriage case. The medical examination at Adiala jail follows those developments, though no immediate details were released about his health condition beyond the areas examined.
Meanwhile, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan on Sunday backed negotiations with the government, noting that talks have made no headway amid a “cold” political atmosphere. “Negotiations should take place, but currently the environment is cold; nothing could be worked out,” the PTI chief told Geo News in Peshawar.
On court orders regarding the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police chief, Barrister Gohar said the court should not have sought an affidavit from the inspector general of police. He was referring to an Islamabad High Court ruling directing provincial governments, including chief ministers, to ensure that government resources are not used to facilitate people participating in any protest leading towards the federal capital. In a verdict on a petition challenging the PTI’s planned march, the court ruled that provincial governments should ensure that no public servant is compelled to participate in any march leading towards Islamabad.
The political backdrop remains fraught, with the PTI pressing for Imran’s release while the government has yet to respond to the latest medical examination. The party’s planned march on September 27 is expected to intensify pressure, even as its chairman acknowledges the stalled dialogue process.
