The unexpected Andrew Garfield, Owen Thiele plane encounter has found a glamorous second chapter, with the two actors reuniting at the 2026 Academy Museum Gala over the weekend after first crossing paths on a flight that made an emergency landing last month.
Thiele, 30, shared highlights of his evening at the Saturday, October 17 gala in an Instagram post on Monday, October 19. The carousel of images opened with a photograph of him and Garfield, 43, smiling with their arms around each other. “had to take pics with my fans it was a lot but i’m grateful !” Thiele wrote in the caption, also thanking Giorgio Armani and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The reunion follows an unforgettable September 9 flight from Los Angeles to New York City that was forced to make an emergency landing in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Thiele and the former Spider-Man star happened to be aboard the same Delta Airlines flight, which also carried actor Nick Robinson, Love Island USA’s Dylan Wrona and singer Mark Ambor.
After the plane landed in New Mexico, Thiele posted updates that quickly went viral on social media. In a captioned selfie at the time, he indicated that the Artificial actor was on board. “If plane went down it would’ve said Andrew Garfield and others. Nick Robinson here too. Andrew Garfield, Nick Robinson and others,” he wrote.
The Andrew Garfield, Owen Thiele plane encounter clearly left a lasting impression, and their friendship appears to be taking off in the weeks since. Thiele’s latest social media post featuring moments from the Academy Museum Gala also included a clip of Sabrina Carpenter seemingly greeting him on the red carpet, along with shots of him chatting with fellow attendees Taylor Swift and Joey King and posing for a selfie with Emma Chamberlain and Hailey Bieber.
The gala appearance marks a stark contrast to the tense circumstances of their first meeting, when passengers awaited word after the Delta flight was diverted. Thiele’s real-time posts from Albuquerque gave followers an inside look at the situation and introduced an unlikely connection between the Adult star and Garfield.
Neither actor has publicly elaborated on the friendship beyond Thiele’s social media posts, but the pair’s red-carpet photo has given fans of the Andrew Garfield, Owen Thiele plane encounter plenty to talk about.
