ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has issued an urgent call for the government to convene an emergency summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to address what it describes as a rapidly deteriorating security situation following military actions against Iran. The party warned that escalating tensions threaten to plunge the region into a catastrophic conflict with global repercussions.
In a strongly-worded statement released on Saturday, PTI Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram expressed “deep alarm” over recent developments, characterizing attacks on Iran as “a blatant violation of international law and the sovereignty of a neighbouring Muslim state.” He emphasized that the Muslim world “cannot afford silence in the face of aggression” and called for immediate diplomatic intervention to prevent further escalation.
“Urgent diplomatic action is imperative to prevent the Muslim world from being dragged into another devastating war,” Akram stated. “Such reckless military actions risk igniting a wider regional conflict with catastrophic consequences for the Middle East and global stability.” The PTI official warned that the current trajectory could destabilize the entire region and have grave implications for economic stability and the security of the Ummah.
At the heart of PTI’s proposal is the convening of an emergency OIC meeting to forge a unified Muslim response. The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, representing 57 member states, has historically served as a platform for coordinating Muslim-majority nations’ positions on international crises. Akram argued that such a platform is “essential to unite the Muslim world, seek a lasting solution to the escalating conflict, and thwart attempts to sow division within the Ummah.”
In a controversial demand, the PTI information secretary called for the immediate release of incarcerated party founder Imran Khan, asserting that “only he possesses the credibility and leadership to guide the Muslim Ummah through this historic crisis and mobilize diplomatic efforts” for an OIC summit. This comes amid ongoing legal proceedings against the former prime minister, whose detention has been a source of significant political tension in Pakistan.
The statement also addressed Pakistan’s potential role in the conflict, with Akram emphasizing that “Pakistan must ensure its territory, airspace or logistical facilities are not used for any military operations that violate international law or further destabilize the region.” This position aligns with Pakistan’s traditional policy of non-interference in regional conflicts, though the country maintains complex relationships with various Middle Eastern powers.
