US May Ask India To Provide Military Or Drone Base

0

On May 17, The EurAsian Times had reported that the USA was pursuing India for military bases to paralyse China. The Pentagon has been searching for military base opportunities in the Indo-Pacific since 2004.

Global Defense Posture Review had planned to increase the number of overseas USA facilities by replacing and supplementing cold war era bases in Germany, South Korea and Japan with FCOSs ( Forward operating sites) and CSLs (Cooperative security locations). First, one is small installations that can build up rapidly and the second one hosts nation facilities with little USA personnel but with equipment and logistical capabilities. Both of them can be activated when it seems necessary.

The USA wants to deploy 60 percent of its surface ships into the Indian Pacific. For this purpose, it wants safe bases in the adjoining area of the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal, Andaman and Nicobar for refuelling its ships and other logistic operations.

India is interested in providing its military bases to the USA because it is also serving its foreign policy interest. By this, it will be able to destabilise China. The USA wants to become a major naval power in the region, to control any kind of peace-threatening activity. But inside the story, both of them are looking for their own national interests.

US Asks India To Restore Kashmir’s Autonomous Status

The protracted and brutal military siege in Kashmir is likely to be lifted and the restoration of the special status of Kashmir is expected, as Modi calls an all-party meeting on the Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir next week.

On 5th August 2019, the Modi government changed the special status of Kashmir by abrogating Article 35A and 370 of the Indian Constitution, changing it to a union territory governed directly from New Delhi. Despite the presence of 500,000 soldiers in the occupied territory already, thousands of troops were deployed additionally.

The all-party meeting is likely to discuss the restoration of the statehood of the Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir on June 24. The union Home Secretary reached out to the leaders to invite them to the meeting. The four former Chief Ministers of Kashmir have been invited including Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Mehbooba Mufti.

As per sources, the US President Joe Biden, who has been asking Pakistan for military bases for surveillance in Afghanistan, played a leading role in restoration of Kashmir’s autonomous status. The US may try to please Pakistan with this move to ask for a favour in the shape of a drone or military bases in return.

Pakistan also wrote a letter to the UN-Security Council President, expressing concerns over reports of Indian intention of further demographic changes in the disputed territory.

Prime Minister Imran Khan in a recent interview also indicated to re-engage with India if it simply gave a road map to restore the statehood of Kashmir.

Number Of Drone Strikes In Pakistan Under Last Four Governments

0

The United States used Pakistani soil for its military and drone operation for many years. Getting allowance from former President General Pervez Musharraf through US-Pakistan Drone Deal helped the US to set their drone bases in Pakistan, but they were still bound to strike only that target given by Musharraf administration.

After General Musharraf’s departure, Zardari administration showed flexibility in the drone deal which allowed the US to carry out drone strikes without Pakistani government’s approval. Hence during 5 years of Zardari government, highest number of US Drone strikes were carried out.

During Nawaz Sharif’s tenure, Pakistan witnessed fewer drone strikes as compared to Zardari government, but the United States still had its influence in Pakistan which allows them to carry drone strikes.

Since Imran Khan assumed the office as Prime Minister, not a single drone strike was carried out by the US on Pakistani soil. According to Airwars head Chris Wood, who monitored US drone strikes, Imran Khan has always been against the US military or drone bases in Pakistan, that’s the reason why no US drone strike was carried out on Pakistani soil since he became the Prime Minister of Pakistan.
