Pro China Leader Of “India Out Movement” Mohammed Muizzu Becomes President Of Maldives

India has faced a substantial setback as Mohammed Muizzu, the opposition leader, secured a decisive victory in the Presidential elections, marking a pivotal moment in Maldivian politics. Representing the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Muizzu unseated the incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), an outcome that is set to redefine the geopolitical landscape of the region.

His official inauguration is scheduled to take place on November 17, a date that will likely mark the beginning of a new era in Maldivian governance.Muizzu’s ascendancy to power carries significant implications, particularly in the context of international relations.

He is widely perceived as being aligned with China’s interests in the Maldives, a stance that raises concerns about the future dynamics of the region. In contrast, his attitude towards India, a substantial neighbor and a traditional ally in terms of security and economics, appears less favorable.

This alignment with China became evident during an online meeting with Chinese Communist Party officials held last year, during which the president-elect articulated his commitment to strengthening the bonds between the Maldives and China.

This commitment suggests a potential shift in the Maldives’ foreign policy towards closer ties with Beijing. The foundation of Muizzu’s election victory was largely built upon his sustained campaign against India’s considerable political and economic influence in the Maldives.

Over the years, New Delhi’s engagement in Maldivian affairs, including the deployment of troops to thwart a coup attempt in 1988, has left a historical imprint. However, this involvement has not always been well-received by the predominantly Muslim nation, leading to periodic resentment and a desire for greater autonomy in decision-making.

As Muizzu takes office, the geopolitical balance in the Indian Ocean region is likely to be recalibrated, with potential implications for India’s relations with its neighbors and its broader strategic interests in the area.
