Karachi Braces for Extended Rainfall as New Weather System Approaches

KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather alert forecasting the arrival of a westerly wave in Karachi from Tuesday evening, bringing sporadic rainfall to the metropolis starting Wednesday. This new weather system is expected to deliver showers from March 25 to 29, accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms, according to official predictions.

The PMD stated that the westerly wave will enter parts of Balochistan on March 24 and intensify by the night of March 27. Under its influence, wet spells are anticipated in multiple districts including Panjgur, Turbat, Kech, Awaran, Gwadar, and Quetta. In Karachi, today’s weather will remain partly cloudy to cloudy with a maximum temperature of 33 degrees Celsius and 88 percent humidity. The forecast indicates that several other districts in Sindh, including Hyderabad, Sukkur, Dadu, Kashmore, Jacobabad, and Larkana, will also experience rainfall during this period. This comes after recent weather disruptions during Eid-ul-Fitr, where rain with thunder and lightning affected Eid prayer arrangements in various parts of the city.

Earlier this month, Karachi witnessed tragic consequences from severe weather when at least 19 people lost their lives after a powerful thunderstorm accompanied by gale-force winds lashed the port city. The upcoming weather system raises concerns about potential similar impacts, particularly in vulnerable areas. For context on Karachi’s climate, refer to Karachi’s Wikipedia entry.

Residents are advised to take necessary precautions as the PMD monitors the situation. The department’s warning highlights the need for preparedness in coastal and urban areas prone to flooding. To understand broader weather phenomena in South Asia, see BBC Asia weather coverage.

As Karachi prepares for the incoming system, authorities are urged to ensure drainage systems are clear to mitigate flooding risks. The extended forecast suggests a significant weather event that could impact daily life and infrastructure across the region.
