In a significant development for Pakistan’s fisheries sector, Russia has officially approved the import of fish and seafood from Pakistan, opening a major new market for the country’s exporters. Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced the approval on Friday, hailing it as a historic achievement that paves the way for Pakistani seafood to enter the Russian market for the first time.
The minister revealed that 16 Pakistani companies have been granted permission to export fish to Russia. This access is not only pivotal for bilateral trade but is also expected to serve as a gateway to other member countries of the Eurasian Economic Union, potentially expanding Pakistan’s regional economic footprint.
Chaudhry expressed strong optimism about the economic impact, projecting that Pakistan’s annual seafood exports, currently valued at over $500 million, could surge to approximately $800 million following this market entry. Exports to Russia alone are anticipated to generate initial revenues of around $300 million. This growth aligns with broader efforts to enhance Pakistan’s global commodity trade.
To ensure compliance and quality, the Marine Fisheries Department is overseeing that all seafood exports meet stringent international standards. The minister emphasized that Pakistan’s warm-water fish varieties hold a competitive advantage in global markets, and with improved infrastructure and adherence to these standards, a substantial increase in exports is foreseeable.
Logistically, seafood exports will be transported via sea, air, and land routes. Chaudhry highlighted that land connectivity to Central Asian nations offers a cost-effective trade corridor, facilitating access to markets in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan, where demand for Pakistani fish is robust. Pakistan’s ports are increasingly recognized as key hubs in promoting regional trade and economic integration.
This approval marks a strategic milestone for Pakistan’s fisheries industry, promising enhanced revenue streams and stronger trade ties with Russia and neighboring regions. It underscores the sector’s potential to contribute significantly to the national economy through expanded market access and improved export capabilities.
