The federal government has officially announced summer vacations for all educational institutions in Islamabad, providing a much-needed break for students and staff amid the rising temperatures. According to a notification issued by the Federal Directorate of Education, model schools, colleges, and other federal institutions in the capital will remain closed from May 25, 2026, to July 31, 2026. Classes are scheduled to resume on August 3, 2026.
The notification also addresses institutions in hotter regions, mandating an earlier closure from May 23, 2026, to July 31, 2026. School heads have been directed to complete all official records and administrative tasks before the vacation period to ensure a smooth transition. This directive aims to prevent any administrative backlog and ensure that the new academic session begins without disruptions.
The announcement follows similar decisions by provincial governments. Earlier, the Sindh Education Department declared summer vacations for all public and private schools, colleges, and universities in the province. According to a formal notification, these institutions will observe a two-month break from June 1 to July 31, 2026. The decision was made in a Steering Committee on Education meeting held on February 12, 2026, underscoring the advance planning for the academic session 2026-2027.
Summer breaks are a common practice in Pakistan to protect students from extreme heat, which often peaks in June and July. The education system in Pakistan typically includes a summer vacation of 6-8 weeks, with variations by region. The BBC reports that heatwaves have become increasingly frequent in South Asia, prompting authorities to adjust academic calendars accordingly.
