Two foreign women were kidnapped and sexually assaulted in Defence area, Lahore, and the police have lodged three more suspects with a judge today, who gave them five days physical remand in police custody.
The suspects were taken before the Cantonment Courts asking for remand for a period of 14 days in view of the recovery of weapons allegedly used in the incident not yet being done. The prosecution also told the court that the ages of the accused had to be ascertained through medical examinations, as part of the investigation.
The police say all eight of the nominated suspects have been arrested in the case. Previously officials have indicated two of the suspects are “high-profile” people. The two foreign nationals involved in the case have left Pakistan since and are now outside the country after being recovered, on July 3.
The court asked the suspects if they wanted to make any statements during Monday’s hearing, but they refused. Magistrate also questioned whether they had been given the services of a lawyer and the accused replied that there was no lawyer on their side.
The court then agreed to put the three suspects in police custody for five days to allow them to be further investigated. Four other suspects—including a relative of a top political official—had been remanded in police custody for July 8 before.
The three new remanded suspects, police said, were security guards and domestic workers in the service of the main suspects.
In the other case, a Station House Officer (SHO) was released on pre-arrest bail by a sessions court. The SHO has been charged with illegal entry into the home of a judicial magistrate in an effort to have statements of the foreign nationals recorded.
Police had filed a case against SHO Faryad and other officials of Defence C police station for entering of the magistrate’s house without his consent and pressuring him to speak to Lahore DIG (Operations) Faisal Kamran on phone.
The DIG (Operations) has since apologised to the judiciary for the incident, and has indicated that the intervention was meant to avoid media and international condemnation of the handling of the case.
