Islamabad ranks 83rd globally in public safety, according to the latest safety index, placing the capital ahead of major cities like London, Moscow, Toronto, Glasgow, and Istanbul, as announced by the capital police on Tuesday. The ranking, which covers 401 cities worldwide, reflects significant improvements in law enforcement and crime prevention in Islamabad.
The police highlighted that this year, Islamabad police achieved a 100 percent detection rate in homicide cases, apprehending all accused involved in such crimes. Notable cases successfully resolved include the Group Captain Asim Tariq murder case, the H-9 triple murder case, the trader Amir Awan murder case, the Sardar Faheem murder case, the Al-Falah bank robbery case, and the safe recovery of a foreign child. These successes underscore the effectiveness of investigative procedures and the commitment of the police force to delivering justice.
In addition to tackling violent crime, Islamabad police recorded a 27 percent reduction in property crime in 2026 compared to 2025, with 1,499 fewer incidents reported. Significant declines were observed in major offenses such as robbery, dacoity, murder, and vehicle theft. This reduction is attributed to enhanced patrolling, strategic deployment of personnel, and community engagement initiatives.
To bolster counter-terrorism and emergency response capabilities, Islamabad police established specialised units, including SWAT and Delta Force. These highly trained teams are equipped to handle high-risk situations, respond to terrorist threats, manage critical incidents, and provide rapid support during major security operations. Their creation reflects a proactive approach to emerging security challenges.
Further enhancing public safety, a dedicated Margalla Trail Patrol Unit was set up, comprising mounted, foot, and motorcycle squads, to ensure the safety of tourists and visitors. City watchers and night patrolling officers have been deployed in commercial areas to strengthen public security and prevent crime. The K-9 unit was introduced to detect explosives and hazardous materials, while a Special Protection Unit (SPU) was formed to secure Chinese nationals residing in the federal capital, demonstrating coordination with international partners.
Under the Special Initiative Police Station (SIPS) project, police stations across Islamabad are being renovated and upgraded to promote modern, citizen-friendly policing. Additionally, a Cascade police service center was established in the Diplomatic Enclave to provide priority services to embassies, diplomats, and their staff, streamlining security and administrative support for the diplomatic community.
These comprehensive measures have positioned Islamabad as a safer city, contributing to its improved global ranking. As the police continue to implement innovative strategies and community-focused initiatives, the outlook for public safety in the capital remains promising.
