US president accuses outlets of publishing ‘fake news’ and warns other media organisations could face similar restrictions
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Friday announced that CNN, MS NOW and Politico would be barred from the White House, accusing the three outlets of repeatedly publishing what he called “fake news”.
Trump made the announcement in a post on Truth Social, saying the ban would take effect immediately. He also warned that other media organisations could face similar restrictions.
The president accused the outlets of reporting “fiction and lies” about his administration and the United States. CNN, MS NOW, Politico and the National Press Club had not immediately responded to requests for comment, according to Reuters.
The move comes amid Trump’s continued disputes with news organisations over their coverage of his presidency. He has previously criticised broadcasters over programmes and comedy shows that have mocked or criticised him and his administration, and has called on the Federal Communications Commission to take action against some stations.
Trump has also taken steps against the Associated Press. In 2025, the news agency was excluded from parts of the White House press pool after it continued using the name “Gulf of Mexico” rather than Trump’s preferred “Gulf of America”. The AP subsequently filed a lawsuit over its exclusion.
The president has also pursued legal action against several major news organisations. His disputes have included lawsuits involving The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, while earlier cases involving ABC and CBS resulted in settlements.
The latest White House restrictions could face legal scrutiny over First Amendment protections for freedom of speech and the press, according to reporting on the announcement.
Trump’s latest action adds to an increasingly contentious relationship between his administration and major US news organisations, with the president repeatedly challenging coverage he considers inaccurate or hostile.
