Bollywood star Salman Khan has publicly condemned the misuse of artificial intelligence, demanding strict punishment for those who produce fake AI-generated videos and asking authorities to bring in legislation to stop such content.
Khan raised the matter on the reality show “Bigg Boss 20,” and a clip of his comments has been widely shared online. He said the speed at which AI has advanced is “scary” and called its misuse a grave concern.
“Someone made an AI video, or did AI voice dubbing, it is wrong. AI has progressed so much, it is very scary. It is a very serious thing,” he said.
Salman Khan pointed out that people are using AI to alter or twist what others have said, and to create videos featuring individuals without their permission. “You said something, and someone used AI to edit it and abuse. You know what they’re doing? AI videos bana rahe hain yeh. Bahut saare logon ke (They’re making AI videos of so many people), and even I am there in the AI video,” he said.
Khan argued that those who knowingly produce and spread such material should face legal consequences, drawing a distinction between them and viewers who may be unaware a video is fake. “Now, people who don’t know it is AI-generated content might post Salman Khan was there. But those who know this reality and still created the video, what kind of people are they? So those kinds of people should be put behind bars,” he said.
Salman Khan also pushed for new laws and tighter oversight of social media platforms to limit the circulation of AI-generated content. “Jab tak koi ek aadh, do aisa andar jaayega nahi na, tab tak yeh rukne wala hai nahi. There has to be a law needs to be passed, and there has to be censorship on social media,” he said.
A growing problem
Deepfake videos and images of film personalities have become an increasing worry across online platforms. Actors including Rashmika Mandanna, Katrina Kaif, Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt have all been targeted in the past.
Mandanna was one of the first Bollywood figures to speak out after a deepfake video using her face went viral in 2023, calling the experience “extremely scary.” Several public figures, among them Amitabh Bachchan and Naga Chaitanya, voiced their support for her at the time.
