Govt Reduces Defence Budget From 17.6% to 16.3%

It has long been observed that specific and well-known figures are given about Pakistan’s defense budget. Critics of the military say that the military takes 70 or 80 percent of the total budget.

The Minister of Finance, Mr. Shaukat Tareen presented Rs. 8,400 billion federal budget in the National Assembly on Friday. According to the budget, for the fiscal year 2021-22, the total defence budget is 1370 billion rupees. Out of the total budget, only 16% is allocated for defence.

Let’s discuss the details of the defence budget, Rs. 651Bn is allocated for the Pakistan Army,
Rs. 291Bn is allocated for the Air Force and Rs. 148Bn is allocated for the Pak Navy. The allocation is 2.54% of the GDP.

However, Rs.1.29 trillion were allocated for Defence in the budget 2020-21 last year out of the total Rs.7294.9 billion which was 2.86% of the GDP.

Russia Lifts Rice Import Ban From Pakistan

Pakistan to witness another progress in export as Russia lifts rice import ban from Pakistan after 2 years. This development came after the Ministry of Food Security Department of Plant Protection (DPP) of Quarantine Division proposal on phytosanitary measures was implemented.

Pakistan used to export upto 35,000 tonnes of grain and rice’s to Russia which was worth $40-50 million, but this export was suspended in 2019 after detecting Khapra beetle from Pakistani rice. Once again, Pakistani farmers and exporters will get a boost in their earning and due to the ban lifting.

Four Pakistani rice exporters got approval from the Russian National Plant Protection Organization (NPPO), one from Lahore, one from Chiniot and two from Karachi.

Federal Government Raises Minimum Wage To 20,000 PKR

Finance Minister Shaukat Tareen presented the “Budget for the Fiscal Year 21-22” in the National Assembly today. Major decisions were made to allocate resources to different sectors like health, education, defence etc. This year’s budget allocated 37% more to the Public Sector Development Programme as compared to the last year.

The government took a decision to increase the Federal Government Employees salary by 10%. Likewise, to minimise inflationary pressure on labourers and workers, the government has increased their salary to 20,000/- per month. Shaukat Tareen said that this increase in salaries would be applicable from 1st July 2021.

Apart from this, an increase in orderly allowance from Rs. 14,000 to 17,500 per month has also been proposed in the budget. The government took all these decisions to lessen the economic burden on the low-income class.

Imran Khan Refuses To Meet CIA Chief

The prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, refused to meet CIA Director William Burns during his secret visit to Islamabad in April. This is the second time PM Khan has called the US to follow state protocols.

Mr Burns visited Pakistan to negotiate on US bases in Pakistan. He was conveyed that Pakistan would never allow the US to use its land or airspace. During his visit, Mr. Burns had asked to meet PM Khan, but he was told to follow the state protocols.

Back in 2018, PM Imran Khan had refused to meet Mike Pompeo, the US Secretary of State without following protocol as Mr. Khan waited to chair the meeting. In fact, the visit of Mr. Pompeo was delayed earlier and later reduced to 4 hours.

Uttar Pradesh Police arrested the Karni Sena leader Thakur Shekar Chauhan on the 9th of June for his outrageous remarks about Muslim women in a video that was two months old but went viral in the recent week.

Karni Sena is a Hindu party motivated by hatred against Muslims. Even the party’s National Chief, Surajpal Amu, himself is anti-Muslim. He also endorsed the lynching of Asif Khan in Haryana.

Saudi Arabia Pledges Rs 37.4 Billion For Mohmand Hydropower Project

Saudi Ambassador in Pakistan, Nawaf bin Saeed Al-Malkiy, met with the Federal Minister for economic affairs, Omar Ayub Khan, in Islamabad on Wednesday. In the meeting, the Saudi envoy said that the Kingdom has promised to lend a loan of 901 million Saudi Riyal (37.4 billion Pakistani Rupees) for the construction of Mohmand Dam. The loan will be given for 25 years at a concessional rate of 2%.

According to an official statement issued after the meeting, the dam will be constructed on Swat river in district Mohmand of KPK with a gross water storage capacity of 1.2 MAF and will generate 800 MW of electricity. The dam will also irrigate 16,000 acres of land and will play a key role in the socio-economic advancement of the province.

Omar Ayub emphasized that besides unfastening the hydropower potential of KPK province, this Hydropower project will also enhance energy security by increasing the share of hydel power in country’s total energy.

Religious Cleric From KP Arrested For Threatening Malala

A Religious Leader named “Mufti Sardar Ali Haqqani” from KPK’s Lakki Marwat district has been arrested for threatening Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai on her recent remarks regarding Marriage/Partnership.

According to Dawn, Lakki Marwat District Police Officer (DPO) confirmed that an arrest had taken place on Wednesday after a FIR was filed against the Mufti under Anti-Terrorism Act.

According to the FIR, a video was also circulating on social media showing Mufti at a gathering in Peshawar in which he was urging the people to attack Malala by taking law into their own hands.

Moreover, he also said that he will be the first one to attempt a suicide attack on Malala whenever she returns to Pakistan. The religious leader was also armed as per the FIR.

It also added that Mufti didn’t try to file any application on any legal forum but instead he expressed to take the law into his own hands and also tried to urge others, He got arrested after these life threatening statements made against Malala.
