A US naval strike group led by the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln has arrived in Middle Eastern waters as tensions with Iran continue to escalate, US Central Command said on Tuesday.
President Donald Trump said he believes Iran is still interested in negotiations, despite mounting pressure over Tehran’s crackdown on nationwide protests. The protests have fractured the country and drawn international concern.
Speaking about recent developments, Trump described the deployed naval force as a “large armada” and noted Iran has contacted the United States repeatedly to discuss a potential deal. He said Tehran “wants to talk” and has made several overtures toward dialogue, though he did not provide details of any formal negotiations.
The deployment comes amid heightened uncertainty over how Washington will respond to Iran’s internal unrest, which has seen thousands of protest-related deaths reported by Iranian state media and independent groups alike. Iran’s leadership has vowed to retaliate against any US military action.
A US official said Washington remains open to discussions if Tehran is willing to engage, underlining that diplomatic channels have not been closed despite the lack of formal diplomatic relations.
Analysts suggest the presence of the carrier strike group could serve dual purposes: deterring further escalation while signalling that the option of military action remains on the table if Tehran’s behaviour does not change.
Trump has previously hinted at possible military measures against Iran in response to its handling of the protests, though he says he prefers a diplomatic solution if feasible.
Context: Deadly protests in Iran
Iran has witnessed significant unrest amid nationwide protests that began in late 2025. Reports from Iranian state media and international sources indicate that thousands have died in the crackdown, though exact figures remain contested due to restricted information and communication blackouts.
Rights groups and external monitors have expressed concern over the scale of violence. The unrest has also drawn international diplomatic focus, with Western nations condemning the crackdown and calling for restraint.
Overall, the combination of military posturing and diplomatic signals underscores a complex and evolving situation between the United States and Iran.
