Putin Reaffirms Russia’s Support for Iran Amid Ongoing Crisis

MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin has reiterated Moscow’s support for Iran, describing Russia as a “loyal friend and reliable partner” during a period of heightened regional tensions.

According to the Kremlin, Putin conveyed the message in Nowruz greetings sent to Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian, expressing hope that the Iranian people would overcome current challenges with resilience

Russia has criticised recent US and Israeli actions against Iran, warning that the conflict risks destabilising the entire Middle East and triggering a global energy crisis.

Despite these statements of solidarity, reports suggest uncertainty over the extent of Moscow’s practical support to Tehran, with some Iranian sources indicating limited tangible assistance during the ongoing crisis.

The Kremlin has also dismissed reports of a proposed intelligence deal with Washington involving Iran as “fake,” while maintaining that its partnership with Tehran does not include a formal mutual defence commitment.

Russia has repeatedly stated it opposes Iran developing nuclear weapons, warning such a move could spark a wider arms race in the Middle East, even as bilateral ties between the two countries remain strategically significant.
