KARACHI: The Sindh Health Department has activated public health protocols after confirming a case of mpox in Karachi’s Buffer Zone area, marking the latest development in the global monitoring of the viral disease formerly known as monkeypox.
Health officials confirmed on Wednesday that a 20-year-old male resident tested positive for the mpox virus following PCR analysis at Dow University of Health Sciences. The patient, who first exhibited symptoms including high fever, headache, and characteristic rash on April 2, received confirmation of infection on April 8 and has since been transferred to an isolation ward at the Sindh Institute of Infectious Diseases.
“The patient is in stable condition under our care,” stated medical officials at SIDH, who emphasized that standard isolation protocols are being followed. Health authorities have identified and placed three close contacts—the patient’s parents and a cousin—under medical observation. None have shown symptoms to date, according to department statements.
In response to the confirmed case, Sindh Director of Health Dr. Asif Syed has ordered the formation of a special investigation team led by Dr. Shankar to trace the origin and transmission pathway of the infection. The team will conduct epidemiological investigations while coordinating with national health authorities.
The Sindh Health Department has issued public guidance urging citizens to maintain vigilance while avoiding panic. Officials recommend immediate medical consultation at government hospitals for anyone experiencing high fever accompanied by unusual skin rashes. The department emphasized that mpox typically spreads through close physical contact and that general population risk remains low.
This case emerges amid ongoing global surveillance of mpox, a viral zoonosis that has seen sporadic outbreaks worldwide since 2022. Health experts note that while the disease can cause severe symptoms in vulnerable populations, most cases resolve without intensive medical intervention.
The provincial health department has assured the public that adequate medical supplies and isolation facilities are available, with monitoring systems activated across major healthcare centers. Officials continue to coordinate with the National Institute of Health and international health organizations for updated guidance.
