A US F-16 fighter jet crashed in Blair Township in northern Michigan on Thursday afternoon, according to local authorities.
Emergency crews responded to the crash near County Road 633 and Blair Townhall Road, south of Traverse City in Grand Traverse County.
The Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs said the pilot survived the crash and was in stable condition at a local hospital.
No other injuries have been reported so far.
The aircraft was reportedly based in Texas. Authorities have not yet released information about what caused the crash.
The pilot, a member of the 149th Fighter Wing at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, was conducting a routine training flight in an F-16 when an unspecified incident occurred about seven miles south of Grand Traverse, Michigan, a unit spokesperson told Fox News Digital.
The aircraft was conducting a routine training exercise when the crash occurred, according to the spokesperson.
Emergency management officials initially issued a shelter-in-place order for an area along County Road 633, between Jefferson Place and Blair Townhall Road. Residents were advised to remain indoors, close windows and vents, and follow directions from emergency personnel.
Authorities have since replaced the shelter-in-place order with an evacuation order covering an area within one mile of the crash site. People inside the designated area have been instructed to evacuate away from the intersection of County Road 633 and Jefferson Place.
Grand Traverse officials said the aircraft crashed near County Road 633 and Blair Townhall Road, while traffic in the surrounding area has been halted. Emergency responders were dispatched to the site, and officials urged the public to keep away from the area.
The incident remains under investigation as emergency crews and officials continue to respond at the scene.
