The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has issued a critical alert to Pakistani citizens, urging immediate renewal of expired Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs) ahead of a strict June deadline. Failure to comply will trigger financial penalties and potentially disrupt access to essential services, including banking, telecommunications, and government welfare programs.
In an official statement, NADRA revealed that approximately 27.4 million national identity cards have already expired nationwide, alongside millions of other documents like Overseas Pakistani CNICs and Child Registration Certificates. The authority clarified that while penalty provisions under existing law have been held in abeyance to facilitate the public, enforcement will commence after the June cutoff. This marks a significant shift from previous leniency, signaling a crackdown on documentation lapses.
The consequences of inaction are severe. NADRA cautioned that expired CNICs could lead to the suspension of bank accounts, deactivation of mobile SIMs, and denial of verification-based services. Crucially, access to vital government support schemes—such as the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) and fuel subsidies—may be blocked. Individuals may also encounter obstacles in property transfers, vehicle registrations, and other legal transactions.
Collaborative data with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) underscores the scale of the issue: over 8.1 million mobile SIMs remain active against 4.5 million expired CNICs. Authorities warned these SIMs face imminent blocking. Separately, NADRA advised families to transfer ownership of roughly 1.5 million SIMs registered under deceased relatives to prevent service interruptions. The authority has also begun sending SMS reminders to parents whose children have turned 18 but not yet applied for their first CNIC.
To streamline renewals, NADRA directs citizens to its official website or nearest offices. The move aims to modernize national records and curb identity fraud, aligning with broader digital governance initiatives.
