75 UK MPs back motion calling for sanctions on Israel for Warcrimes

LONDON: At least 75 British lawmakers have signed a parliamentary motion urging the government to impose sanctions on Israel over alleged violations of international law in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon.

The motion was introduced by Labour MP Richard Burgon, who called for a range of measures, including an arms embargo, restrictions on trade with Israeli settlements, and targeted sanctions against Israeli officials.

According to Burgon, the proposal has drawn support from lawmakers across different parties. Among the signatories are former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, Scottish National Party foreign affairs spokesperson Brendan O’Hara, and Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran.

The motion criticises Israeli policies in the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly the expansion of settlements in the West Bank, and calls for concrete action rather than symbolic statements.

This is not the first such initiative by Burgon and his colleagues. Since 2024, similar motions have been tabled in the UK Parliament, urging the government to align with United Nations resolutions calling for an end to Israel’s presence in occupied territories.

Burgon has previously argued that stronger measures are needed to halt alleged violations, stressing that political leaders must move beyond rhetoric to tangible policy actions.

The latest motion comes amid ongoing international concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza Strip, where large-scale destruction and displacement have been reported since the escalation of conflict in October 2023.

The proposal is expected to seek additional backing from lawmakers in the coming weeks, though it is not binding on the government unless adopted through further parliamentary procedures.
